Chemical Peels

Ancient Egyptians and the Romans used various lactic acids to peel their skin. In the Middle Ages, wine vinegar with tartaric acid as its active ingredient was used for the same purpose. Today, these historical “chemical peels” are known to contain alpha hydroxy acids, which are the active ingredients responsible for the skin exfoliation.

Chemical peels are techniques still used today as a method of improving the appearance of the skin. A chemical solution is applied to the skin which causes it to separate, peel off, and allows new skin to regenerate. The new skin is smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin, and may also be more even in color.

Millions of chemical peels are performed each year. Doctors and trained technicians have used various peeling agents for decades and are experts in performing all types of this chemical rejuvenation. Today, with the public's increasing interest in slowing the effects of the aging process, chemical peeling has emerged as an exciting anti-aging procedure. What can a Chemical Peel do?

Chemical peels are used to treat fine lines, especially around the eyes and mouth. Wrinkles caused by sundamage, aging and hereditary factors can be reduced or even eliminated with this procedure. Mild scarring and certain types of acne may also be treated with chemical peels. In addition, pigmentation of the skin in the form of sun spots, age spots, freckles, etc., as well as skin that is dull in texture and color may be improved with chemical peels.

How are Chemical Peels performed?

The procedure may be performed on the face, neck, chest, hands, arms and legs. The skin is thoroughly cleansed, and the eyes and hair are protected. One or more chemical solutions - an alpha hydroxy acid, such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid; trichloroacetic acid (TCA); or carbolic acid (phenol) are used. Our staff is highly qualified to select the proper peeling agent based on the type of skin damage present. During the chemical peel, these solutions are applied to various areas of the skin. These applications produce a controlled "wound", enabling new, refreshed skin to appear. Most patients experience a warm to somewhat hot sensation that lasts about five to ten minutes, followed by a light stinging sensation. This sensation subsides shortly after the chemical is removed from the skin.
