Photorejuvenation is most often a procedure used to improve the appearance of the facial skin. Intense pulsed light therapy, or IPL, is somewhat similar to laser resurfacing, but instead of removing the epidermal layer, IPL targets the lower dermal layers and stimulates them to produce healthy new tissues in all of the skin layers.
Focused Light Energy
The device used in photorejuvenation is a handheld instrument that emits broadband light energy. In other words, the device is calibrated to deliver several different wavelengths simultaneously. When the proper wavelength mix is emitted, it passes right through the epidermis without heating it up. Instead, the energy is absorbed somewhat deeper down, where darker tissues more readily absorb light rays without reflecting them.
This heating effect shrinks the collagen in the skin. The body responds to this by producing more collagen over the next few weeks. Capillaries constrict, and this helps diminish the appearance of such blemishes as acne scars, injury scars, and even age spots.
Simple Cosmetic Treatment
There isn’t any special pre-treatment regimen the client must follow. Keeping the skin out of direct sun is a good idea, and using less makeup, especially primers and concealers, is also recommended. The treatment itself begins with the application of a soothing gel. Some of the newer IPL instruments even have a cooling tip to keep the client comfortable.
The device is pressed against the skin, and the lamp is flashed for about a millisecond. Several pulses are emitted before the device is moved slightly and repositioned. An entire area the size of one-half of the face can be treated in just minutes.
Are You a Candidate?
If you’re experiencing dynamic wrinkles, marionette lines, or crow’s feet near the mouth or eyes, or are noticing tiny horizontal bands on the forehead, you may be an ideal candidate for photorejuvenation. If your injury scars are becoming darker or more highlighted, and if your freckles or ages spots are getting darker, you can expect positive results from photorejuvenation.
This is a very simple cosmetic procedure that can be performed around your other activities. Contact us at Delta Laser & Skin Care Centre to learn more and to see if you’re a prime candidate for photorejuvenation. We are located in Delta, BC. Contact our office today for a consultation!
