BOTOX® was originally approved for the treatment of wrinkles and fine lines on the face, but in July of 2010, it was given additional approval for treating chronic migraines.
What is BOTOX®?
BOTOX® is a safe, highly purified agent that causes paralysis of the body’s muscles and aesthetically and medically to produce beneficial results.
BOTOX® and Migraines
During the 1990s, numerous patients who had received BOTOX® for cosmetic purposes said that they had experienced improvement in their headaches.
As a result, several clinical trials were performed regarding the effects of BOTOX® on cluster headaches, tension headaches and episodic migraines, but the conclusions were not encouraging.
However, the results did suggest that patients who suffer from chronic migraines could benefit from the treatment, so additional studies were performed.
How It Works for Migraines
Scientists aren’t yet certain of the precise way that BOTOX® works on migraines.
Unlike with cosmetic BOTOX® treatments, it does not work for chronic migraines by paralyzing overused muscles.
Instead, it’s believed that the product prevents peripheral nociceptive neurotransmitters from being released. This is thought to halt the pain processing centers that are responsible for chronic migraines.
Is It Safe?
BOTOX® is safe for almost anyone. There are temporary side effects associated with the injection process, such as bruising, redness, and tenderness. These typically resolve on their own in a few days.
Is Treatment Right for Me?
