Two forms of fractional lasers are in use today, the non-ablative or Fraxel®, and the CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser types.
Generally, lasers like the Fraxel® are better suited for patients who are younger, those with fine wrinkles, and mild to moderate acne scars.
Fraxel® lasers can treat the following:
* Sun damage, aging on the face, chest, and neck, and fine wrinkles
* Some melasma cases
* Some types of acne scars and surgical scars
* Skin texture and
* Precancerous lesions
Fractional lasers are normally not ideal for redness, but can help with brown pigments.
Normally, a number of treatments are performed (generally three to five) once every three to eight weeks. Fraxel® laser procedures are performed with minimal risk and very little discomfort.
How does Fraxel® resurfacing work?
The Fraxel® laser forms very small micro thermal zones underneath the skin’s surface, and the skin responds by removing the old, damaged skin and replacing it with healthy new skin.
One treatment can replace about 20 percent of scarred, sun-damaged, or wrinkled skin. It stimulates the body into producing new collagen that is used to form new skin to replace the old skin. You could say that the treatment tricks the body into making new skin.
Your Fraxel® Treatment
First, we apply a numbing agent to the treatment area. We then apply some gel to allow the laser rollers to move gently over your face.
Your treatment should last about one hour for a full facial, and most patients only experience a mild prickling sensation. You should be able to drive yourself home.
How long should I expect my results to last?
Every case is different, but it depends upon how well you guard against sun exposure and your individual, genetic aging disposition.
If you wear protective clothing and apply sunscreen, your results will be maintained longer than someone who spends a lot of time exposed to the sun outdoors or frequents tanning salons. If you protect your skin properly, you may only need annual maintenance treatments.
