Fraxel® laser therapy is a cosmetic enhancement treatment that helps to improve the appearance of various skin issues, including sun damage, melasma, wrinkles, acne scars and skin discoloration. It is particularly effective in the diminishing of enlarged pores.
How It Works
Fraxel® laser treatment uses a unique delivery of laser energy in the form of thousands of tiny columns deep into the skin. The targets of laser columns are known as microthermal treatment zones. This fractional treatment eliminates old, pigmented cells in order to stimulate a healing process that will reveal a smoother, glowing skin tone.
The method of sending pinpointed laser energy into the microthermal treatment zones allows the treatment to be highly targeted, sparing the surrounding tissues. Since the target area is treated in tiny segments, rather than all at once, healing occurs more rapidly than other types of skin resurfacing treatments. Old skin imperfections will be replaced with blemish-free, younger-looking skin with an improved tone and texture.
Before and During Treatment
Prior to your treatment session, you will have a consultation with our expert in order to learn about the procedure, discuss your goals and work to develop a plan. Our team will advise you on the number of sessions that will be necessary based on your goals and the areas to be treated. Sensitive areas like the neck, hands and chest can receive Fraxel® treatments because the targeted approach avoids damage to surrounding areas.
A feeling similar to a mild sunburn is likely immediately following your session. This should only last about an hour. A pinkish tone will remain for five days to a week afterward. There are a few specific stages you can expect as your skin goes through the process of healing. A phenomenon known as bronzing will occur, causing your skin to take on a bronzed hue, for just a few days to a couple of weeks. The length will depend upon how intense your treatment was.
As the new epidermal layer replaces the destroyed tissue, gentle flaking of the skin may occur. Using moisturizer can decrease the exfoliation process that leads to flaking. Sun protection is particularly important during this time and for the months that follow your treatment, as your new skin will be sensitive.
